ARREST THE MILITARY SERVICEMAN NOW AND TURN HIM OVER TO THE PHILIPPINE AUTHORITIES!

WE DON’T WANT ANOTHER “DANIEL SMITH”!

KAPEDERASYON LGBT Sectoral Organization (Kapederasyon) is one with the many indignant voices in condemning the killing of Jennifer Laude, a transgender woman. We call for a thorough investigation and swift justice, and warn the government that we will remain vigilant against efforts to cover-up the facts of the case and give special treatment to the suspected perpetrator who was identified as a United States soldier. Reports said that Jennifer was last seen entering a lodge at Magsaysay Drive, Olongapo City with the soldier. Minutes later, the soldier left the lodge alone leaving Jennifer lifeless with her face in the toilet bowl.

The killing of Jennifer is enraging and abominable, but we are alarmed even more so to know that the crime was allegedly triggered by the victim’s gender. This case comes as a bitter reminder that our cause to advance the recognition, respect, and equal treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) is relevant and urgent. Hate crimes have been a persistent nightmare of the LGBT sector. Every day, hundreds of our kapederasyon are subjected to hate speech, discrimination, and violence. We are victimized physically, emotionally, and psychologically amidst the backdrop of the prevailing patriarchal and “macho” culture. This intolerance will proliferate as we continue to condone the abnormal treatment of LGBTs. The absence of any laws addressing this intoletance also contributes to the perpetration of the culture of hate and violence against our sector.

Furthermore, we join the demand to assert the country’s laws and have the suspect face Philippine court. We caution the government against engaging in another whitewash under the guise of implementing the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). We fear that the suspect will be another Daniel Smith who was given special treatment and escaped the Philippine justice system.

Thus, we demand that the suspect be handed over to Philippine authorities NOW! We also call for the immediate junking of the VFA which has been proven to be one-sided as it protects the rights only of the “visitors” and not of the Filipino people.

Again, we call for swift justice for Jennifer Laude, we call for an end to hate crimes, and we say US Troops Out Now!
